I had been a stay-at-home mom for 13 years after graduating from college with a marketing degree. I had worked a few jobs prior to starting Lake Erie Mercantile in 2011. Ultimately, I needed to do something in which I could use my creativity, while at the same time gain some piece of mind while raising three (not so easy to raise) girls. They are wonderful now, but they gave me a run for my money- Literally! My passion is home décor and design which I think you will notice in my fabric selection and in the things I make. My mother taught me to sew at a young age and I loved making my own dresses and skirts. When I had my own family, I used my sewing skills to make curtains, valances and such to decorate my home. The quilt shop idea was born as our only local fabric store closed. Where was I to go for fabric to make curtains, and pillows, and dresses?! I was not yet a quilter. After much debate, it was decided that a quilt shop would bring more customers than a home décor shop, but I could still do my thing while adding a new skill- Quilting! It fit right in. Now I make fabulous bedding, in addition to what I already knew! Today, our shop highlights a diverse mix of bags, pillows, clothing, quilts, and ELNA sewing machines. Distributed by Janome America, ELNA is the company's premier brand. We strive to give you the best service and buying confidence. It isn't a small thing to purchase a new sewing machine and we believe that what we offer is a very good product made to last a very long time. When you purchase from us, you are purchasing from someone you know, and we won't ever lose sight of that. We want you to come back again and again.
As of the last few years, I have found the man of my dreams who also happens to be superbly talented technically and otherwise. His 'real' job is computer programming/developing, but he has become the shop IT guy in addition to being our sewing machine maintenance and repair technician. When you buy a machine from us, Rob will make sure it runs in tip-top shape for years to come. He doesn't do ANYTHING half-way which sometimes drives me nuts because time can be of the essence, but it works when you are in need of a repair. He will do it right.
Together we hope to continue to build our shop and make it feel like home to all who enter. We want to make sure you get the very personalized service that you can't get anywhere else. I have been known to design quilts for those who come in with fabric but no ideas and I cherish the friendships that have been built around my shop. If you don't leave here with a smile, we have not done our job. As we continue to grow, look for an improved website and much more online presence. It is a tough thing to gain and maintain an audience and it will take many more hands to help us on our way. Thank you for trusting us and allowing us to help you keep your creativity growing. UPDATE: As of November 2023, we have closed the storefront and sell online only. As saddened as we are to not see your beautiful faces, I have to care for my aging parents. I hope to open again in the future. |
